Oklahoma is a state in the Great Plains region of the United States of America and its capital is Oklahoma City. The state derives its name from a Native American term for ‘Red People’ owing to its rich Native American past. Oklahoma counts among the least expensive states in the country and the same trend is reflected in the cost of tourism here. Visitors have a gala time here with its mountain ranges, prairie, mesas and forests that (at some places) lead to an authentic experience of abundant wildlife. A road trip through Route 66 and a host of standard bells and whistles like architectural masterpieces, museums, art galleries, botanical gardens and recreation centers would further fill you with a lot more to cherish than you would have first expected.
US Route 66

US Route 66 is also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America and the Mother Road. It was one of the first highways in the country and was established on 11 November 1926. It served as a major path for those who migrated to the western regions of the country during 1930s. It is now hallmarked by several roadside attractions, central to which are Oklahoma Route 66 Museum (in Clinton) and National Route 66 and Transportation Museum (in Elk City).

Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum

The Oklahoma City National Memorial in Oklahoma City is a memorial that honors the victims and survivors of the Oklahoma City bombing on 19 April 1995. It is located on the site of the former Murrah building where this ghastly event took place. Some salient parts of this memorial are the Reflecting Pool (where a thin layer of water flows over polished black granite), Field of Empty Chairs (168 empty and hand-crafted chairs to represent the victims) and the Survivors' Wall (it is the only remaining original portion of the Murrah Building).

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is a zoo and botanical garden in Oklahoma City. This 100 year old zoo is spread across 119 acres and is home to over 1900 animals, 15000 plants, 1500 aquatic creatures and a wide range of butterflies. This remarkable biodiversity hotspot is inclusive of a complete spectrum running from the African plains to tropical rainforest. Some popular segments here include Elephant Habitat, Cat Forest (Lion Overlook), Aquaticus and Butterfly Garden.
