Formerly known as Bombay, the city of Mumbai is the state capital of
Maharashtra and the most populous city in India. This coastal city along
the Arabian Sea is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of
the country. Mumbai is a cosmopolitan metropolis and its stature is
amplified by the presence of Bollywood, the center of the Hindi film and TV
industries. Mumbai was an epicenter of Islamic rule and colonial Portuguese
and British empires from 13th to mid-20th century. These empires carved out
their respective architectural niches in the city, a fact that is evident
in their monuments and statues that stand till date.
