Herrenhausen Garten (or Herrenhausen Gardens)

The Herrenhausen Gardens located in Hanover are a heritage of the early 19th century royal authority of the ‘Kings of Hanover.’ The garden is divided into 4 parts - the Great Garden, the Mountain Garden (Berggarten), the George Garden (Georgengarten) and the Welf Garden (Welfengarten). The Great Garden is one of the most distinguished Baroque formal gardens in Europe for its 50 sprawling hectares of lawns and hedges, and several statues. The Mountain Garden was designed as a vegetable garden in 17th century but is focally known for a miserably botched-up experiment of growing and cultivating rice. The 250 year old George Garden is now a famous meeting place and is home to a caricature museum called Wilhelm-Busch-Museum.

Hanover Zoo

Established in May 1865, the Hanover Zoo is the fifth oldest zoo in Germany. It is spread across 22 hectares and consists of more than 3400 animals of 237 different species. This zoo provides all the animals to freely move about in their respective native settings and the visitors can see them from a distance without visible barriers. Hanover Zoo is divided into many theme-based zones that respond to a certain wildlife zone that are found in different parts of the world. Some of them are of - Zambezi (an African savannah), Gorilla Mountain (located on the highest point of the zoo) and Jungle Palace (an Indian rainforest exhibit themed like an abandoned Hindu temple).

Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall or New City Hall)

Opened in July 1913, the New Town Hall in Hanover is a remarkable city hall. This splendid castle-like building had taken 12 years to complete at a cost of 10 million Marks then. The New Town Hall was heavily damaged by the air bombings by Allied Powers during the Second World War. Today it hosts a government-operated registry office and several local businesses.

The Marktkirche St. Georgii et Jacobi (or Market Church of Sts. George and James)

The Market Church of St. George and James is locally known as Marktkirche or ‘The Church on the Marketplace’ in English language. It is the primary Lutheran church in Hanover and was built in North German brick gothic architectural style in 14th century. Its altar was carved from linden wood in late 15th century. It is hallmarked by a stunning display of the ‘Passion of Christ’ in 21 scenes, and some of these scenes are related to the city’s two patron saints, Saint George and Saint James. The Market Church of St. George and James has 11 bells and the heaviest of them is called the Bell of Christ and Peace.
