Nicknamed ‘the Land of Enchantment’, New Mexico is a state in the United States. The state is a delightful mix of picture-perfect landscapes, delectable cuisines, fusion architecture, excellent museums and a remarkable fine arts scene. It is also a hotbed of Native American, Spanish, British and American cultures. You can add to this rosy picture some Ancestral Puebloan ruins (especially in Acoma), huge volcanic craters (in Valles Caldera), a hub of UFO and alien activities (in Roswell) and a Wild Wild West frontier (in Taos). This is seconded by other natural attractions like rivers, forests, nature parks, historic trails and scenic hotspots. Owing to all these mutually exclusive attributes and its capital Santa Fe (which is also the oldest capital city in the US), New Mexico should top your itinerary for this year’s vacations.

White Sands National Monument

Located about 30 minutes ride from the city of Alamogordo in New Mexico lies the state’s numero uno attraction called the White Sands National Monument. This is special because it is made of white gypsum, a highly soluble white powdery substance that has accumulated in the form of 50-60 feet high dunes over a period of many centuries in Tularosa Basin. You would expect rain to dissolve the gypsum and carry it to the sea, but since the basin is enclosed from all four sides, it offers no outlet for gypsum to move out and get dissolved.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Unique and captivating in its own might, the Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a mostly underground bracket of nearly 120 known caves made of limestone in New Mexico. The Carlsbad Caverns is the most famous of these and is endowed with electric lights, paved trails, and elevators. You can take audio trips to its eerie insides for bat tours and a trip through some prehistoric cavern formations hallmarked by stalactites and strange geological features.

Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier National Monument is where you get to see some of the most definitive volcanic landscapes and archaeological ruins of 12th century in New Mexico. This famous national monument is based on a former dwelling place of the Pueblo people from 1150 to 1600 AD. It is also flanked by a fine museum (that primarily contains Puebloan artifacts like pottery, tools and household items), a trail, hiking features and native flora and fauna.
