Knoxville is a city and was the former capital of the American state of Tennessee. This city was once an integral part of Confederate and Union Armies’ activities during the Civil War. The famous Mabry-Hazen House has been the headquarters of these rival armies at different points of time. The city is exclusively known for hosting the 1982 World’s Fair. That year, the theme for the event was ‘Energy Turns the World.’ The World Fair was characterized by the introduction of the touch screen display screens and cell phones, the firsts of their kind in the world. A prominent mark of 1982 World Fair, the Sunsphere, still stands today. It is a 266-foot steel tower topped by a five-story gold globe and remains a symbol for the city of Knoxville.
Other prominent attractions here include the Market Square, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and The University of Tennessee Gardens. The latter is home to more than 3,000 varieties of plants in a 12-acre urban public garden that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Entry in the garden is free for all.
