SS Great Britain

SS Great Britain is a museum ship and former passenger steamship. A marvel of Mechanical engineering, she was the world’s largest vessel afloat when it was launched in 1843 and continued to hold this status until 1854. SS Great Britain was different from other contemporary ships because it was the first ship to be built with iron and to be equipped with a screw propeller while all other large ocean-going ships had only one of these two luxuries to choose from. Designed for trans-Atlantic service between Bristol and New York, this ship was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic in 1845.

Clifton Suspension Bridge

One of Bristol’s most defining landmarks, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a famous 19th century bridge in England. It measures 702 feet between its piers over River Avon and the 260 feet deep Avon Gorge. The Clifton tower was originally planned to be topped with sphinxes but the ornaments were never constructed, and the bridge was left to remain content with side cut-outs. The Clifton Suspension Bridge has also hosted several cultural events of international significance like the first modern bungee jump in 1979, the last ever Concorde flight in 2003 and a handover of the Olympic Torch relay in 2012.

Bristol Zoo

Bristol Zoo is the world's oldest provincial zoo. Opened in 1836, this Victorian-era zoo near Clifton Suspension Bridge is focally known for some of the most significant firsts in US zoological history. Three of the firsts are - for breeding the first squirrel monkey born in captivity (in 1953), known for the first chimpanzee born in Europe (in 1934) and for the first black rhino born in Britain (in 1958). Bristol Zoo is home to about 300 mammals across 50 species like gorillas, Asiatic lions, pygmy hippos, red pandas and rare species like fruit bats and aye ayes. The zoo’s Twilight Zone was the world’s first exhibit of its kind to feature the twilight behavior of nocturnal animals to the daytime visitors.
