The Citadel

An impressive feat of engineering, the citadel looks like a bow of a ship sticking off the peak of the mountain. It is a massive fortress whose construction was started in 1805 and it took about 15 years in completion of the construction with about 20,000 workers involved in the process. The citadel was designed as a part of fortifications to shield against a French invasion of Haiti, and when the country split into North and South, this citadel became the redoubt of Henry Christopher, who was the then King of North Haiti. This citadel was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

Sans Souci Palace

Located close to the citadel, Sans Souci Palace was once the residence of King Henry. This palace was designed to boast about the cultural and civility prowess of the time of King Henry. Sans Souci Palace also housed quarters for staff, a hospital, and a waterworks supplying running water. This hospital of the past is now a primary school.

Marche au Fer

One of the most interesting places to visit in Cap Haitien, Marche au Fer is the iron market named after a market in Port-au-Prince. This market can be reached by walking through a narrow path unobstructed by sellers and stalls. Outside the pavilion are the stalls selling vegetables, fruits, meat, seafood, and several other dry products. Inside there are different things on sale such as all kinds of food, batteries, stereos, and bike parts.

Place d’Armes

Located in front of the Cathedral, Place d’Armes is dominated by monuments dedicated to two key revolutionary leaders- Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Toussaint Louverture. This plaza is a natural meeting place for the natives as it is an excellent place to relax and enjoy time with friends.
