The Old Quarter is the fingerprint of Luxembourg City’s historical identity. It is focally known for the capital city’s ancient line of fortifications that rightly were nicknamed the ‘Gibraltar of the North’ because they were considered completely impregnable until they were taken down in 1883. Ever since then, Luxemburg has switched sides to live with its old heydays and has embraced scenic parks, gardens, cobbled streets and historic mansion that attract thousands of visitors every year. Also of note here are the series of old bridges and quaint alleyways that seem to sandwich a visitor between antiquity and modern times.

National Museum of History and Art also has a dedicated section for housing 20th century artworks.

The Bock

The Bock is a promontory in the old historical district of Luxembourg City. This is a natural fortification that is surrounded by the waters of River Alzette from three sides. This place first rose to life during the advent of Romans in 4th century but was given significance by Count Siegfried who built his heavily fortified castle in 963 AD. The Bock, the fortress and all surrounding line of defenses were attacked and rebuilt for centuries but were repulsed every time. Later the castle was demolished in 1867 following a war treaty and is now only survived by some remains of the old castle and its remarkable underground passages.

Place Guillaume

Place Guillaume II is a public square, an open air music venue in Luxemburg City. It is best known as the host to the annual Rock um Knuedler rock concert since 1991, and is a famous music concert, which is open to public for free. It is hallmarked by a horse-mounted statue of King of Holland and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, William II (1792-1849). This statue is flanked by a Neo-Classical masterpiece called Town Hall that was officially unveiled by King William II in 1844. Place Guillaume II is noted for its beautiful Town Hall and the House of Raville, a nearly 500-year old mansion with an artistic balcony and staircase.
