Caldera

Caldera is the sea-filled volcanic crater. It was formed as a result of huge volcanic explosion that occurred nearly 3,600 years ago. Due to the explosion the center of the island was blown out. The caldera measures approximately 12 kilometers by 7 kilometers. At present, it is said to be home to some volcanic activities. In its center are two islets with gas emissions & hot springs. A single day excursion is offered by several agencies via boat including a bathe in the hot springs!

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Santorini was set up in the year 1960. It contains artifacts found during excavations on the island. Some of the worth watching collection here includes geometric black & red vases from 5th century B.C., Sculpture from the Archaic to the Roman period, Inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period, Minoan ware, and more. The museum also hosts impressive frescoes as well as sculptures of the Hellenistic period, Byzantine works of art and even some remains of prehistoric times.

Ancient Akrotiri

See the village left behind after the devastating volcanic eruption that made the island uninhabitable. The site is very well done and I highly recommend getting a guide to show you around the site and discuss the history of the island, the eruption, and the following destruction. Nearby is the famous Red Beach below a spectacular red cliff wall. The beach is accessible along a path from the town of Akrotiri.

Museum of Prehistoric Thira

The Museum of Prehistoric Thira houses finds from the excavations at Akrotiri, conducted under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens, the earlier excavations at Potamos made by members of the German Archaeological Institute at Athens, and rescue excavations at various other sites on the island, which were carried out by the 21st Ephorate of Antiquities for the Cyclades and Samos. Some of the earliest pieces here include Neolithic pottery, Early Cycladic marble figurines, Early Cycladic pottery, including interesting pieces of the transitional phase from Late Cycladic II to Late Cycladic III period (Kastri group) from the Christiana islands and Akrotiri (3300-2000 BC), Middle Cycladic pottery with a series of impressive bird jugs, many of them decorated with swallows from Ftellos, Megalochori, and Akrotiri (18th-20th century BC), and Early Cycladic metal artifacts from the last two sites.
