A census-designated place in Lake and Peninsula Borough in the US state of Alaska, Igiugig is a village located at the mouth of the Kvichak River. Lake Iliamna flows at the boundary of this village. Residents of this village trace their roots to the surrounding rural areas of Newhalen, Branch, Big Mountain, Kaskanak Lake, and Kukaklel Lake. The Lake Iliamna/Kvichak River water system is renowned for having the best sportfishing in all of Alaska. July experiences exceptional runs of sockeye salmon from Bristol Bay up the Kvichak River. The months of August and September are best times for fishing in the only designated Trophy Rainbow Trout area in the state, where rainbows grow in excess of 30 inches. The month of September is also the time for hunting caribou or ptarmigan at Igiugig.
