Mattoon is a city in Coles County, Illinois, United States. This nondescript town of the 1830s had evolved into a prominent manufacturing and hub during the World Wars over a period of next hundred years. The Douglas-Hart Nature CenterThe Douglas-Hart Nature Center is a nature reserve with a varied landscape of habitats consisting of tall grass prairie, native forest woodlands and wetlands spread over 70 acres. This nature center is flanked by two miles of trails passing through all these local habitats. Also of note are several native deciduous and coniferous trees that royally dot the woodlands here to provide a calm and tranquil ambiance.
Time TheatreA stellar example of Art Deco style, the Time Theatre was rebuilt in place of the 1911 Grand Theater that was destroyed in a fire in 1938. It is characterized by a glossy cream-colored glazed terra-cotta façade and a marquee with multi-colored neon lighting over an octagonal clock resembling a wristwatch.
