Officially the Republic of Namibia, Namibia is a country in southern Africa. The country shares its borders with Botswana to the east, Angola and Zambia to the north, and South Africa to the east and south. Namibia has been made famous by its unique wildlife and dramatic desert landscape. The country also offers tourists a potpourri of cultural experiences, from drinking German beer in the colonial city of Swakopmund to admiring ancient San rock paintings. Namibia is also a country that can be explored independently, with national parks offering self-drive safaris.

Popular Destinations in Namibia

Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a coastal city in Namibia. The sandy beaches of the city face the Atlantic Ocean. The city’s colonial landmarks, established by German colonists, include the Swakopmund Lighthouse and the Mole. The Swakopmund Museum, located next to the Swakopmund Lighthouse, introduces visitors to the Namibian history. The National Marine Aquarium of Namibia, located on the seafront, is home to rays and sharks. The Jetty Bridge in Swakopmund overlooks the golden sands of Palm Beach. Adventure enthusiasts must visit the Strong Atlantic waves at Walvis Bay, located in the south of the city and popular for surfing, sport fishing, and kiteboarding. An excellent place to visit for nature lovers, the bay’s Bird Island is an artificial nesting area for seabirds such as flamingos and Cape cormorants. Adventure enthusiast must not miss out on visiting the vast Namibia Desert offering opportunities for climbing wind-carved rock formations, hiking, and sand surfing.

Windhoek

Windhoek is the capital of Namibia. The city is in the country’s central highlands. Arguably the most famous tourist attraction of the city, the sprawling Heroes’ Acre War Memorial, located south of the city, commemorates Namibia’s 1990 independence. History lovers can also visit 1890s Alte Feste, a former military headquarters on a hilltop in the city center boasting historical exhibits. Colonial influences on the city are evident in nearby buildings such as the sandstone Lutheran Christus Church. Another excellent place to visit for history buffs, the TransNamib Museum explores the country’s transport history. In the northwest is the diverse Katutura suburb, boasting markets and local taverns named shebeens. In the farther west of the city, Daan Viljoen Game Reserve is home to mountain zebras, kudu, and affluent birdlife.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is a port town on the coast of Namibia. Located in the south of town, the dunes and dry Kuiseb River Delta are a base for several adventure sports. Namib-Naukluft National Park, located in the east of the city, is home to oryx, ostriches, and mountain zebras. Tourists can also take a sandy off-road track leading south to the secluded Sandwich Harbour lagoon, which is a testing ground for several migrant wading birds. There are angling spots like Sarah Se Gat and beaches like Langstrand lining the coast to the north.

Best Time to Visit Namibia

Weather-wise, the best time to take Namibia flights is from December to March. It is the dry season in the country and wildlife viewing opportunities are at its best during this period. It is also the peak tourist season in the country. It is advisable to book tickets in advance to get cheap flights to Namibia as airfares tend to rise during peak season.
