    Uruapan is strategically located at the western end of the Purepecha Highlands. It is the second largest city in Michoacan state of Mexico and was the capital of the state during French Intervention. Uruapan was conquered by Spaniards in 1522 and played a significant role in the War of Independence. The historic city center is lined with elegant colonial buildings which have Moorish elements. Uruapan is divided in six neighborhoods which have a distinct vibe of their own. The city has always been an economic hub and a popular region for growing avocados.

    Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park

    Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park is an urban park located 15 minutes from the main plaza, Plaza de Martires de Uruapan. The National Park is home to the 30-meter-high Tzararacua Waterfall, or the Cascada de Tzararacua, as it is locally known. Many kinds of butterflies and birds can be found in the park and the foliage is tropical. There are multiple walking paths alongside the river and many fountains for the visitors to enjoy.

    Archaeological Site

    Tingambato Archeological site is located 33 kms from Uruapan surrounded by avocado groves. The ruins of the ceremonial site consist of three altars, two plazas and a ball court, all of which have a Teotihuacan influence. An eight-meter pyramid can also be found here. Around 32 skulls and 15 skeletons were found in a nearby underground tomb, hinting at sacrificial rituals. The site is not overcrowded with tourists and offers a serene environment.

    La Huatapera, Regional Museum

    Founded by Don Vasco de Quiroga, La Huatapera is housed in a building which was one of the first hospitals in Latin America. The museum is in the heart of the Historical Center of Uruapan. The building is grand, and the architecture is impressive. Visitors will find here permanent exhibitions of handicrafts of indigenous communities of Uruapan and Michoacan.
