Mesker Park Zoo
An excellent place to visit for animal lovers and nature buffs, Mesker Park Zoo is the first zoo of Indiana. It offers tourists an opportunity to witness over 700 animals representing 186 species from all over the world. The zoo is located on 45 acres of picturesque area on the city's northwest side. In the zoo, tourists can also explore South Amazon rainforest of Amazonia, Lake Victoria, the Family Garden, and the rolling hills in between.
Angel Mounds State Historic Site
One of the best-preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the US, Angel Mounds State Historic Site features a model museum that works to recreate the lives of the native people. This museum tells the story of the indigenous people of the Middle Mississippian culture who lived in this area from 1000 to 1450 AD. More than 600 acres comprise this site, which also incorporates an interpretive center, a working reconstruction of the 1939 WPA archeology laboratory, and recreations of Mississippian buildings.
Evansville African American Museum
Located in Lincoln Gardens, one of the nation's first housing projects, Evansville African American Museum is one of its kinds in Indiana. The museum opened its doors in 2007. Between 1937 and 1997, the area housed thousands of African-American families. The exhibits of the museum aim to communicate the story of these families. The mission of Evansville African American Museum is to develop as a cultural center and community resource to collect preserve, and educate visitors on the traditions and history of African American families, communities, and organizations.
Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science
One of Southwestern Indiana's most established cultural institutions, Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science is a general museum that maintains a permanent collection of more than 30,000 exhibits. These exhibits include decorative arts, natural history artifacts, and anthropological artifacts. In the museum, more than twenty temporary exhibitions are put on display every year in four changing galleries.
