Telemark Canal
This sixty five miles long water canal was carved out of rock in 1892 AD and this Herculean effort was then dubbed as the ‘the eighth wonder of the world.’ The Telemark Canal connects Skien to Dalen in southern Norway by linking several long lakes in the Skien watershed through a series of 18 locks. It consists of two canals - Skien-Nordsjo and Bandak-Nordsjo. While the former was essentially for ferrying passengers, the latter was designed to transport goods and passengers both.
Brekkeparken Park and Telemark Fylke Museum
Two prominent attractions of Skien are the Brekkeparken Park and the Telemark Fylke Museum. Brekkeparken is a two hundred year old historical park laid out in the British style that creates a perfect setting and a harmonious blend of trails, ponds, and flower beds. The Telemark Fylke Museum is known for the historical Sondre Brekke Manor house of early nineteenth century. It also includes the Berg-Kragero Museum (the city museum in Kragero) to provide for seasonal exhibits. Visitors can see prominent examples of folk art, fashion, architectural styles and local maritime history here.
