In the middle of Santa Catalina Island, California is a privately owned airport called Catalina Airport (AVX). It is popularly known as Airport in the Sky due its location at a height of nearly 1600 feet. Since it was built by blowing away the top of two closely situated mountains and consequently filling the gap between them with truckloads of rocks, all roads from downtown Catalina, leading towards it are at an incline towards the highest point of the island, thus giving it its iconic name. Catalina Airport does not operate scheduled passenger flights. Under favorable weather conditions, it serves general aviation aircrafts, allowing inbound pilots to land for a fee of $25.
