Old Fortress
The Old Fortress is situated on a peninsula eastward to the old town of
Corfu. The fortress was built by the Venetians in 1546. There is an on-site
lighthouse which is the highest point and offers great views of the
seascape as well as Corfu town. The fortress also houses a Doric temple
styled church built by the British and the Public library of Corfu which is
situated in the old British barracks. The grounds are also used for several
cultural and art exhibits.
The Esplanade
Locally known as the Spianada, the Esplanade is the social and commercial
hub of the island. It is the largest square in the country and situated
between the Old Fortress and the buildings of Old Town. Divided in two
segments, upper and lower, it is the main gathering space in Corfu. The
arcaded Liston which is lined with a number of eateries, overlooks
Esplanade. Visitors can enjoy occasional performances but up by brass bands
on the bandstand located nearby.
Corfu Museum of Asian Art
The Corfu Museum of Asian Art is housed in the Palace of St. George and St.
Michael. It has a vast collection which includes artefacts ranging from
ivory works to prehistoric bronzes. It has a fine section on India which
features Graeco-Buddhist figures and the Japanese section features Samurai
armour alongside woodblock prints. The collection also includes an array of
Indian, Japanese, and Chinese paintings. Additionally, Museum of Asian Art
also features sculpture and ancient porcelains.
