Greenville is a city and the county seat of Washington County in Mississippi, United States. The original city was settled in 1824 AD. It was named after a beloved friend of George Washington and major general in the American Revolutionary War, General Nathanael Greene. The current city of Greenville is located along Lake Ferguson and lies about three miles from the older city. It is famous for its casinos, (central to them is a floating casino called the Lighthouse Point Casino on the lake), an adjacent wildlife refuge (the Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge) and a nature park (the Warfield Point Park) that offers some superb hiking trails and picture-perfect surroundings.
Winterville Mounds Historic SiteThe Winterville Mounds Historic Site contains more than twelve mounds presumably made by the Plaquemine Mississippian people sometime between 9th and 13th centuries. This historic site assumes a significant historical quotient, and you should visit it for the nearby Winterville museum that displays burials and structural remains in addition to ceramic and stone artifacts.
Warfield Point ParkSpread across 80 acres near the Mississippi River, the Warfield Point Park is the go to point for camping, picnicking, sightseeing and hiking in Greenville. It is also associated with Washington County Park that has a wide range of native plant life, wildlife and birds to its credit. The Warfield Point Park also hosts two annual festivals called the Warfield Riverfest and Mighty Mississippi Music Festival in June and September respectively.
Yazoo National Wildlife RefugeYazoo National Wildlife is located in Hollandale, a small town at a few minutes ride from Greenville. It is best known for its stunning scenery and bird watching opportunities. You would find migratory birds that are busy nesting, feeding and resting here. It has two wildlife observation areas, a 0.25-mile boardwalk trail leading to an observation platform over Lizard Lake and the other is near the Alligator Pond.
