An autonomous territory on the western side of the Pearl River Delta in China, Macau is the most densely populated region in the world. The region is bordered by the Pearl River Estuary to the South and East and the city of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the North. It is best known around the world as 'Las Vegas of Asia.' Unspoiled beaches, top-class restaurants, and glitzy casinos make Macau an idea tourist destination tucked away on the South China Sea. Poker chips, gondoliers, and bright lights are all part of the reason why most people come here. A former Portuguese colony, Macau has retained much of its colonial charm. The city has its own blend of Macanese culture and can claim to be one of the first Asian cities where East meets West. Visitors will come across Chinese as well as Portuguese elements throughout the city.

A-Ma Temple

Locally known as Temple da Deusa A-Ma, the A-Ma Temple is a splendid temple dedicated to the Chinese sea-goddess Mazu. The temple is a part of Macau's UNESCO Historic Center and located next to the inner harbor at the bottom of Barra Hill. Built in 1488, it is one of the most important religious sites in the city. The temple is divided into six easily accessible sections - Prayer Hall, the Gate Pavilion, Memorial Arch, the Hall of Guanyin, the Zhengjiao Chanlin, and the Hall of Benevolence. The traditional A-Ma Festival is celebrated with much pomp and show every year. The centuries old festival is a revered tradition in Macau which honors the goddess, through several thanksgiving rituals and performances.

Senado Square

Also known as Largo do Senado, Senado Square lies next to the main road, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. A delightful pedestrian area, square is in the historic heart of Macau and contains few of the most quintessentially Portuguese buildings. The major highlights of the square include the imposing

Leal Senado Building, former seat of Portuguese Macau's government, and the 16th- century Holy House of Mercy, widely regarded as the best example of Portuguese colonial architecture in Macau. The square is also an excellent spot for shopping and dining.

The Ruins of St. Paul's

Just north of the Senado Square lies the impressive ruins of Sao Paulo (St Paul's). Once the biggest church in Asia, it was dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. The church was destroyed by fire in 1835. One of the most-visited tourist attractions in Macau, the ruins comprise the Renaissance facade of St. Paul's Church.
