Saint Pierre is famous for offering dramatic views of volcanic Mount Pelee. The city is built among the ruins of old Saint-Pierre. Saint Pierre was once main city and port of the country until the disastrous volcanic eruption of Mount Pelee in 1902. This volcanic eruption destroyed the town killing thousands of residents except a prisoner who was saved by his thick cell walls. Diamond Rock

Spectacular Diamond Rock rises almost straight above the sea, about three kilometers off the south coast of the country. It is the site of an uncanny piece of naval history. This volcanic rock marks one of the best dive sites in Martinique. History lovers can head to the nearby town of Le Diamant to learn all about the intriguing history of the rock. The Anse Cafard Slave Memorial, located on a hill overlooking the beautiful Diamond Beach and Diamond Rock, offers tribute to victims of the catastrophic 1830s shipwreck off the southwest coastline of the country that killed lots of the passengers, together with 20 slaves chained to the boat. Tourists can visit 20 statues of those slaves that stare out to sea, a heartrending reminder of the turbulent history of this stunning island.
