A city in Bethel Census Area in the US state of Alaska, Nunapitchuk is a part of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The city sits on swampy tundra. In Nunapitchuk, the buildings are connected by a network of boardwalks and the city is accessible by small aircrafts, hovercraft, and boats. Nunapitchuk has a total area of 8.6 square miles, of which, 7.9 square miles of it is land and 0.7 square miles of it is water.
Yukon Delta National Wildlife RefugeNunapitchuk falls in the area that is protected under the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. A United States National Wildlife Refuge spread in an area of around 19.16 million acres in southwestern Alaska, Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge is the second-largest National Wildlife Refuge in the country. The topography of the refuge is varied and includes coastal plain ranging to the Bering Sea. The coastal area of the park borders the sea and is a wealthy and productive wildlife habitat that supports one of the largest concentrations of water fowl in the world. In the refuge, there are more than a million ducks and around half a million geese using this refuge for breeding purposes every year. This refuge features huge seasonal concentrations of loons, northern pintails, cranes, swans, and grebes. In the winter season, the waters of the refuge become home to a number of seals, walruses, beluga, porpoises, and minke whales.
