Tegucigalpa, commonly referred to as Tegus, is the capital of Honduras. The
city is in the southern-central highland region of department of Francisco
Morazan, in a valley, surrounded by mountains. Tegucigalpa experiences a
relatively fresh and mild climate. The city is replete with impressive
museums, eateries, and numerous other tourist attractions. Though the
colonial feel of the city is mostly lost, if a visitor looks closely, there
are numerous lovely colonial and scenic areas within the city.
Things to do in Tegucigalpa
The Shrine of Our Lady of Suyapa
Shrine of Our Lady of Suyapa is one of the most visited attractions in the
city and is an excellent place for spiritual tourists. Suyapa, located in
the church, is represented by a wooden sculpture of a virgin found by a
peasant while camping in the pastoral areas of the city. The shrine was
built in her honour and the name of the church is also based on her.
La Leona Park
La Leona Park, another spot in the centre of the city, is located up on the
hill just above the downtown. The park offers magnificent vistas of the
city, incorporating Choluteca River flowing through the city and dividing
the cities of Comayaguela and Tegucigalpa. La Leona Park is well-maintained
with lovely verdant gardens, a low wrought iron railing around, and a small
stand at the centre.
La Tigra National Park
La Tigra National Park, the first national park in the country, is in
propinquity to the city of Tegucigalpa. The park is the most imperative
source of water for the capital of Honduras. It has two distinct areas open
for tourists- El Hatillo and San Juancito. The park is home to around 3
species of amphibians, more than 200 species of birds, and 13 species of
reptiles.
Best Time to Fly to Tegucigalpa
The dry season in the city lasts from February to June which is generally
the best time to book flights from Miami to Tegucigalpa, with the coolest
time of the year being the months from November to February. Showers come
here usually in short bursts, heaviest between August and December making
Tegucigalpa flights cheaper during this period.
