Austin is the capital of the U.S. state of Texas. It is the second most
populous state capital and the southernmost state capital in the contiguous
48 states of the country. The city was originally incorporated as
‘Waterloo’ but was renamed as Austin to honor the ‘Father of Texas’,
Stephen F. Austin, who had also served as the first US Secretary of State
in 1839. Austin is nicknamed ‘The Live Music Capital of the World’ because
it is home to many musicians and live music venues, and because it hosts an
annual film and music festival called the South by Southwest (SXSW). This
event is organized every year in March and churns out an attendance running
into thousands.
