As a prison, it was in operation for only 33 years after accepting its first inmate on 1 July 1876 but its number had swelled considerably to include a total of 3069 inmates before it was shut down in 1909. Some of the most gruesome offenders of 19th and 20th centuries had served their sentences in this famous prison house.

Today it stands as a museum consisting of over 50 restored buildings, a saloon, a hotel, a mill and a blacksmith shop that together tell a spooky story of those halcyon days.
