wood-carved artifacts. Mont-Bouet open-air market is an excellent place to
visit for shopaholics. The market sells a wide array of goods, from
souvenirs and household items to local produce. Located in the farther east
of the city, St. Michel Church is popular for its tall wooden columns with
decorative carvings. To the northeast of the center is Sibang Arboretum
preserving a lot of indigenous tree species. Pongara National Park, located
to the south of the city, is a breeding ground for leatherback turtles and
offers an opportunity for humpback whale watching.
Lambarene
A town on the Ogooue River in western Gabon, Lambarene is well-known for
the Albert Schweitzer Hospital constructed by the famous German doctor in
the early 20th century to cure patients of tropical diseases. There is also
a museum in the hospital boasting paintings, photographs, and personal
items that belonged to the doctor. Tourists can enjoy riding the motorized
canoes on the Evaro, Ezanga, and Onague lakes. These lakes also support
birdlife like herons and pelicans.
Port-Gentil
Gentil is a hub for the petroleum industry. The city is located on the Cape
Lopez peninsula and boasts a sheltered harbor and beaches among which the
most popular one is the Plage du Dahu Beach. St. Louis Church of
Port-Gentil is among the city’s significant landmarks. Located at the tip
of the peninsula is the 20th-century Cape Lopez Lighthouse and to its south
is the Ogooue River famous for being home to several fish species.

Gabon experiences typically equatorial climate with extreme levels of humidity. The driest season here is between the months of June and August while the rainy season is between October and May. The maximum rainfall occurs in April and November. Weather-wise, the best time to take Gabon flights is between May and September (it is also the peak tourist season). It is advisable to book tickets in advance to get cheap flights to Gabon as during peak season, airfare tends to rise.
