A city located on the Nunivak Island in the Bethel Census Area in the US state of Alaska, Mekoryuk is located at the mouth of the Shoal Bay. This city is a part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Most families in Mekoryuk engage in subsistence activities, and most of them have fish camps. Seal meat and oil are common staples in the city.
Yukon Delta National Wildlife RefugeThe second-largest National Wildlife Refuge in the country, Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge is a United States National Wildlife Refuge spread in an area of around 19.16 million acres in southwestern Alaska. The coastal area of the park bordering the sea is a productive wildlife habitat that supports one of the largest concentrations of water fowl around the world. Over a million ducks and around half a million geese use this refuge for breeding purposes every year. The refuge features huge seasonal concentrations of loons, northern pintails, cranes, swans, and grebes. In the winter months, the waters of Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge becomes home to a number of seals, walruses, beluga, porpoises, and minke whales.
