Morelia (also known as Valladolid from 1545 to 1828) is a city,
municipality and the capital of the state of Michoacan in central Mexico.
Located in the Guayangareo Valley, it is home to a remarkable lineup of the
country’s colonial past. Morelia derives its name in the honor of the hero
of the Mexican War of Independence and city’s resident, José María Morelos.
Visitors are wowed with its quaint, centuries-old streets that are dotted
with numerous 300- to 400-year-old buildings. Most of these buildings were
made from a certain type of pink stone quarried from local mines.

The Government Palace
The Government Palace is a two-story, mid-18th century seminary
Baroque superstructure that graces the city center. It is home to the state
legislature and can be easily identified with its grand façade and three
large courtyards. The palace features many murals depicting scenes from the
Mexican Revolution and the country’s independence from colonial Spain.
Clavijero Palace
Clavijero Palace is another grand palace in Morelia. It is located near
Colegio de San Nicolas (the city’s old university) and is named after a
famous Jesuit teacher named Francisco Javier de Clavijero. This palace is
flanked by the Sweet Market (Mercado de Dulces) where one can taste the
city’s delights.
Morelia's Historic Heart: Plaza de Armas
Plaza de Armas is the central square in Morelia. This 16th
century public square features most of the historic buildings of the city.
During the Mexican War of Independence, it is where all the executions of
Mexican patriots were carried out by Spanish rulers.
