Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the most populous city in North
America. It is the oldest capital city in the Americas and is only the
second capital city that was founded by Native Americans.
It was the capital and administrative center of the legendary Aztec Empire
until it was overrun by Spanish conquistadors in 16th century.
The remnants of its glorious history are still seen in its ruins of the
ancient civilization, historical monuments, and pre-Columbian churches.
Things to do in Mexico City
Palacio Nacional (Spanish for National Palace)
One of the oldest buildings in the city, the National Palace is a reddish
tezontle stone superstructure built atop a former and centuries-old Aztec
royal palace in Mexico City. It is hallmarked by a 200-meter-long grand
mansion as the residence of the Mexican President. It is a historic place
because the Freedom Bell was first rung here to proclaim the War of
Independence against the Spanish on September 15th, 1810.
Museo Nacional de Arte (Spanish for National Museum of Art)
Housed inside a state-of-the-art Neoclassical building in the historical
city centre, the National Museum of Art is the Mexican national art museum
located in Mexico City. You should visit here to see and admire its
top-class collection of Mexican art that was prevalent between mid-16 th century and mid-20th centuries.
Templo Mayor (Spanish for the Great Temple)
Mexico City was home to Aztec Empire until 16th century before
it was annihilated by Spanish colonial conquistadors in 1521 AD. However,
many historic Aztec sites were left unhurt because they were located on
either raised grounds or were far away from the line of attack. Some of
those remnants are found in the ruins of Templo Mayor (or the Great Temple
of Tenochtitlán). A star attraction here is a 3-meter-wide round disc that
weighs 2.5 tons dedicated to an Aztec deity.
